What it is
One drink, done properly. Thick sweetened curd beaten smooth, poured into a tall glass or a clay kulhad, topped with a thick layer of fresh malai. Sometimes flavoured with cardamom, saffron or rose, sometimes with chopped dry fruit.
🥛 How to do it right
Go in the morning. The cream is churned fresh each morning and is at its best early. By late afternoon the shop either sells out or the quality drops.
One glass is a meal. Malai lassi is dense. Do not order one alongside lunch and expect to finish both.
Expect to stand. This is not a cafe. You order, you drink, you move on, and there is usually a queue.
Kulhad or glass is your choice. In clay it is cooler with a faint earthiness; in glass you can see the cream layer. Both are normal.
The default is very sweet. 'Kam meetha' gets you less, though the cream itself is not sweetened.
Skip it entirely if you are lactose-sensitive. This is the most concentrated dairy item on a Jaipur menu and there is no lighter version of it.
📍 Location
On MI Road (Mirza Ismail Road), Jaipur's main old-city artery, in the same stretch as Niros and Handi. Ask for it by name once you are on MI Road — it is one of the best-known addresses on the road, and every shopkeeper there will point you to it.
Combine it with Niros or Handi for lunch on the same street, or with a Hawa Mahal and City Palace morning.
