Must-try breakfast in Jaipur
Poha Jalebi
Jaipur, Rajasthan
The everyday Rajasthani breakfast, and a completely different thing from the kachori a visitor expects. Flattened rice cooked soft with turmeric, mustard seed, onion and peanuts, topped with sev, coriander and lemon, served alongside two or three hot jalebi. You eat them together — a bite of savoury poha, then a bite of syrup-sweet jalebi — and the combination is the point. Cheaper and lighter than pyaaz kachori, and what most Jaipur households actually eat in the morning. Widely available at sweet shops and breakfast stalls, including Rawat and LMB.

The story
Why is Poha Jalebi famous in Jaipur?
A household breakfast that also works as street food, which is why it is sold from both. The sweet-and-savoury pairing is typical of Rajasthani eating: jalebi appears alongside savoury dishes far more often than visitors expect, and in many homes it is served with dal or sabzi rather than as dessert.
When to go
Best time to eat it
Poha Jalebi is best enjoyed at breakfast, roughly 7:00 to 10:30 AM, ideally with a hot cup of masala chai or filter coffee to balance the sweetness. Many spots make fresh batches through the day, so it’s easy to fit into your plan.

What it is
Poha is flattened rice softened with a little water and cooked with turmeric, mustard seed, curry leaf, onion, green chilli and peanuts. Jalebi is a fermented batter piped into spirals, deep-fried and soaked in cardamom syrup. In Rajasthan they are served on the same plate.
🍜 Eating it properly
Alternate the two. Do not eat all the poha and then all the jalebi. The savoury-sweet contrast in a single mouthful is the entire idea.
Go early. Poha is a breakfast item and good shops sell out or stop making it by about 10:30 AM. You will not find it at lunch.
The jalebi must be hot. Cold jalebi is leathery and oversweet. If the tray looks like it has been sitting, ask for a fresh batch or go elsewhere.
Squeeze the lemon and add the sev yourself. Poha arrives plain-ish; the lemon and the crisp sev on the counter are what finish it.
It is much lighter than kachori. If pyaaz kachori sits heavy, this is the breakfast to choose instead, and it costs less.
📍 Where to eat it in Jaipur
- Rawat Misthan Bhandar, Station Road — go between 8 and 10 AM for the freshest batch; the same visit covers pyaaz kachori
- LMB, Johari Bazaar — breakfast counter from early morning
- Masala Chowk, Ram Niwas Garden — cheaper and open later, though morning is still better
- Sweet shops and breakfast carts across the old city from about 7 AM
A visitor who eats only kachori in Jaipur has eaten the tourist breakfast. Poha jalebi is the local one.
