☀️ Summer

🌧️ Monsoon

Recommended

Jul – Sep

Warm days and the valley's busiest months — the monsoon reaches Kashmir only weakly, with occasional showers and afternoon thunderstorms; mornings and the higher valleys stay cool.

Pack: light layers by day, a warm jacket for evenings and higher valleys, and a light rain shell.

Spring: April to May

Snow melts from the valley floor in April, and by May the meadows are green, the river is high with snowmelt and the pines are fresh. It is cool, often showery, and quieter than summer. Rafting on the Lidder usually starts once the water settles, around May. Snow lingers higher up, which suits visitors who want to see it.

Early summer: June

June is often the best month: warm days, cool nights, long light and full access to the valleys that are open. It is busy with families, so book ahead.

Yatra season: July to August

The Amarnath Yatra dominates Pahalgam from early July to late August; in 2026 it ran from 3 July to 28 August. The town fills with pilgrims, security is at its heaviest, the highway from Srinagar runs on convoy timings, and rooms and taxis are scarce. Chandanwari becomes a pilgrim base. If you are not a pilgrim, you may prefer to avoid these weeks.

Autumn: September to November

After the Yatra, the town quietens. September and October bring clear skies, golden grass and the first frost. It is an excellent time for Betaab Valley and Aru Valley. By November it is cold and some hotels begin to close.

Winter: December to March

Winter brings snow, and Pahalgam turns quiet and white. The road from Srinagar is usually kept open, but many hotels and restaurants close and some side roads are snowbound. It is a good time for snow and solitude if you are prepared for the cold.

A word on access

Since 2025, which sites are open has mattered as much as the season. Baisaran remained closed in 2026, and other spots have opened and closed in stages. Whatever month you choose, check the current list a day or two ahead. See what's on in Pahalgam for dated events.
