Panchhi Petha
Panchhi Petha is the name every visitor to Agra is told, and it is worth adding a warning to it: many shops trade under some version of 'Panchhi Petha', and the founding dates they claim contradict each other — 1857, 1926 and 1950 all appear in circulation. Treat the name as a style rather than a single shop, and buy from a busy outlet rather than from whichever one is nearest the Taj gate.
What to buy
Petha in every variant — plain dry, angoori (the famous grape-sized pieces in syrup), kesar (saffron), paan, coconut, dry fruit, chocolate. Plus dalmoth, the spicy lentil-and-nut namkeen that travels better than petha and is the smarter souvenir. Most shops also carry gajak in winter, and a range of other north Indian sweets.
Ask to taste before buying. It is normal and expected, not rude. The difference between a fresh batch and one that has been sitting is immediately obvious once you taste them side by side.
Practical
- Roughly 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and outlets stay open through the tourist day.
- ₹100–400 for a typical box; by weight, ₹120–600 a kilo depending on variety. Kesar and dry-fruit grades cost most.
- The outlets worth going to are Hari Parwat / Noori Gate — the area locals regard as the original — and Sadar Bazaar, which is convenient if you are staying in the cantonment or hotel district.
- Sealed boxes for travel, not paper wraps. If you are flying, buy on your last day.
- Cards and UPI accepted at the larger outlets; cash at smaller ones.
If you want the locals' choice instead
Guides who live in Agra consistently recommend Munna Lal Agarwal Petha Wale at Daresi-2 T-point, Rawatpara, and Gopal Das Pethe Wale over the famous brands — smaller shops, better turnover, less tourist pricing. Deviram Sweets is the other old name and is where you should go for bedai rather than petha.
Panchhi is the correct answer if you want one stop, a wide range, and a box that will survive a suitcase. It is not necessarily the best petha in the city.
