Overview

Best time to visit Taj Mahal

Best times to shoot

Sunrise, first 60–90 minutes after opening

The marble turns soft pink, the reflecting pool is still, and the garden is close to empty. This is the only window for a Taj photograph without people in it, and the light is at its most delicate.

4:00 – sunset

Warm low light turns the marble gold and the west face lights up. Busier than dawn but the stone looks its best, and you can move to Mehtab Bagh afterwards for the river-side view.

Full-moon night, 8:00 PM – midnight

Five nights a month only, 400 visitors, booked 24 hours ahead. The marble reads blue-silver. No artificial light is used, so tripods are effectively essential and photography is restricted — confirm the current rules when you book.

Local tips

Arrive at the east or west gate 30 to 45 minutes before opening to be in the first group through security.

Buy your ticket online the day before, including the mausoleum add-on, so you skip the ticket counter.

Leave food, tripods and headphones at your hotel, because security will not let them in.

Pull the free shoe covers over your shoes before you climb onto the marble platform.

Walk to the far end of the platform behind the tomb to see the Yamuna and Mehtab Bagh across it.

Check the fog forecast in December and January, and plan a second morning in case the first is grey.

Hire guides only at the official counter, where they carry an ID card, not from people at the gate.

Why it looks the way it does

Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal as a tomb for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. Work on the main tomb finished around 1648, and the whole complex took several more years. Everything runs along one line. You pass through the red sandstone Great Gate, walk down a long water channel through a four-part Mughal garden, and reach the white marble tomb on its raised platform above the river. A mosque stands on the west side and a matching guest hall on the east, so the view stays symmetrical from the gate.

Getting in

There are three gates. The east gate, reached from Shilpgram, and the west gate are the usual entrances. Petrol and diesel vehicles are kept well back, so you walk or take a battery bus or golf cart from the parking area. The main ticket covers the garden and the platform. A second ticket, which also gives you shoe covers, lets you enter the mausoleum itself. Book online to skip the ticket queue. Children under 15 enter free.

Rules to know before you queue

The Taj is closed to visitors every Friday. It opens about half an hour before sunrise and closes about half an hour before sunset. Food, tobacco, tripods, headphones and most electrical items other than cameras and phones are not allowed in, and drones are banned around the site. Photography is not allowed inside the main mausoleum. Tickets have a three-hour limit, and staying longer can mean a fine.

Inside the tomb

The cenotaphs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan sit behind a marble screen in the central chamber. The real graves are in a lower chamber that opens only during Shah Jahan's Urs each year. Look closely for inlaid stone flowers and the Quranic calligraphy around the arches.

Seeing it by moonlight

On the full-moon night and the two nights on either side, small groups view the Taj at night from near the main gate. There is no night viewing on Fridays or during Ramzan.
