Best photo · Late afternoon, when the red sandstone warms to orange and the Taj glows down the river; early morning for soft light and empty courtyards.
Best combo: Photos here, then a meal at Esphahan (The Oberoi Amarvilas).

Best photo · 6:00–7:30 AM for empty courtyards, low raking light on the red sandstone, and deer on the lawns. Late afternoon gives warm stone but more visitors. Avoid 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM: harsh overhead light, heat haze, and the sandstone goes flat.
Best combo: Photos here, then a meal at Esphahan (The Oberoi Amarvilas).

Best photo · Late afternoon, roughly 4:00 – 5:45 PM, when low raking sun brings out the surviving glazed-tile colour on the upper walls and dome. Midday light flattens the building completely because the surface has no deep relief to cast shadows.

Esphahan, The Oberoi Amarvilas
The Oberoi Amarvilas is the hotel where every room has an unobstructed view of the Taj Mahal from a private balcony, and Esphahan is its fine-dining restaurant. That is the whole proposition: this is the most expensive meal available in Agra, and it is expensive because of the setting as much as the cooking.
What to order
The cuisine is Mughal and North Indian court food, executed at a level nobody else in the city attempts. The dishes consistently named:
- Raan — whole leg of lamb, slow-cooked and carved at the table. The signature, and the thing to order if you are sharing.
- Dal makhani
- Kebabs from the tandoor
- The royal thali — a multi-course tasting of Mughal dishes, and the best way to eat here if you want a representative meal rather than three individual plates.
Vegetarian versions of everything exist and are not an afterthought.
What it is like
Live traditional Indian music is played in the room, the interior is Mughal-revival with arches and jali screens, and the service is the formal Oberoi standard. From parts of the hotel and some terraces you can see the Taj; whether you get a Taj view from your specific table is not guaranteed, so ask when you book and say that it is why you are coming.
Practical
- On Taj East Gate Road, within sight of the monument — the closest fine dining to the Taj there is.
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner services. Reservations are effectively mandatory for dinner and strongly advised for lunch.
- ₹5,000–15,000 for two with drinks. The royal thali pushes toward the top.
- Dress code applies — smart casual minimum, no shorts, and jackets are not unusual at dinner.
- Non-residents can dine here; you do not need a room. This matters, because Amarvilas rooms run ₹50,000–1,00,000+ and dining is the only realistic way for most people to see the hotel.
- Cards accepted; service charge typically included.
Is it worth it
For the food alone, Peshawri at ITC Mughal is better value and is the stronger tandoor kitchen. What Esphahan sells is a complete evening: Mughal architecture, live music, court cuisine and the Taj a few hundred metres away. If you are marking an anniversary, or if you want one genuinely memorable night in Agra and the money is not a constraint, this is it. If you are simply hungry after the Taj, go to Pinch of Spice and spend a tenth as much.
