Maya is the safe first night in Agra. It is attached to a budget-mid hotel in Taj Ganj, a few minutes' walk from the Taj East Gate, and it has been serving travellers long enough to have several hundred reviews at a solid rating. The kitchen does Indian and Chinese, which is the standard north Indian tourist-hotel combination and exactly what you want after a long train from Delhi.
What to order
Butter chicken with rice and cheese naan is the most-praised order and the safest bet. Thali is available and is good value if you want several tastes rather than one big plate. Beyond that: paneer tikka, dal makhani, tandoori chicken, chow mein and chilli potato from the Chinese side, and lassi.
The useful thing about Maya is that the menu can be made low-spice on request and the kitchen will actually do it. If you are travelling with children, or you are new to Indian food, or you have just had three days of street chilli, this is the place to reset.
What it is like
Casual rather than atmospheric, calm, table service, and family-and-couple oriented. It is not exciting and it does not claim to be. It is clean, predictable, open across the day, and within walking distance of your room — which at 9:30 PM after a full day at monuments is worth more than a better kitchen across town.
