Late afternoon, when the red sandstone warms to orange and the Taj glows down the river; early morning for soft light and empty courtyards.

6:00–7:30 AM for empty courtyards, low raking light on the red sandstone, and deer on the lawns. Late afternoon gives warm stone but more visitors. Avoid 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM: harsh overhead light, heat haze, and the sandstone goes flat.

Late afternoon, roughly 4:00 – 5:45 PM, when low raking sun brings out the surviving glazed-tile colour on the upper walls and dome. Midday light flattens the building completely because the surface has no deep relief to cast shadows.

Bedai with Aloo Sabzi
Bedai is Agra's breakfast, and it is not a café breakfast — it is a street kadhai, a queue, and a paper plate eaten standing up before eight in the morning. The bedai itself is a puffed, crisp deep-fried bread made from urad dal (black gram) rather than plain flour, which is what gives it a coarser bite and a savoury depth that a normal kachori does not have. It is split open and served with spiced potato curry, and almost always with jalebi on the side.
Why the sweet comes with the savoury
The combination looks strange and works. Bedai and aloo sabzi are hot, oily and spicy; the jalebi is cold-warm, syrupy and sweet. Agra eats them together in one meal, and most locals will tell you the jalebi is not optional — it is how the breakfast is balanced. If you are offered bedai without jalebi, ask for it.
Where to eat it
- Deviram Sweets — the standard answer, and a fifty-year-old institution. Near Jama Masjid, on MG Road, and at Pratap Pura. The bedai is sold from a street-corner counter outside the shop, and it sells out.
- Shree Thakur Ji Misthan Bhandar, Bansal Market near ITI College in Balkeshwar — the locals' alternative.
- Shanti Sweets, Kamla Nagar.
- Pratap Pura lane generally, in the morning — several vendors, all good.
- Street vendors near Taj Ganj serve it to the early-shift tourist trade.
When
This is strictly a morning dish, roughly 6:00 to 10:00 AM. Vendors fry in batches and the best bedai is the one that came out of the kadhai ninety seconds ago. By 10:30 the good shops are sold out or serving the last of a cooling batch. If you are doing a sunrise Taj, this is the correct breakfast afterwards — come straight from the East Gate to Deviram while it is still early.
Cost ₹30–50 a plate, or ₹40–100 for a complete bedai-sabzi-jalebi meal. One of the cheapest proper meals in the city.
Practical
Eat it hot and eat it standing. Carry cash — most bedai counters are cash-only, though UPI is spreading. There is no seating, no menu and no English spoken at the counter; point at what the person in front of you is eating. It is spicy but not punishing; ask for less sabzi if you want it milder. A glass of malai lassi afterwards, from Kinari Bazaar, is the traditional way to finish.
