Practicalities
The things that go wrong
Book through official channels, and treat anyone promising a guaranteed slot as a warning sign.
What to watch for
- There is no entry fee
- Anyone collecting an 'entry charge' or pressing a donation envelope on you at the gate is not acting for the temple
- Drivers on the Sikandra circuit sometimes add an unscheduled stop at a marble or handicraft emporium between sights
- Decline it before you set out โ commission stops are how the day gets longer and more expensive

General guidance
Planning the visit
Customary practice and what Agra's climate means for a barefoot visit โ not rules posted at this temple. Anything specific to Kailash Mandir is above.
Circling the shrine
At most Shaiva temples the circuit around the sanctum is not completed in a full circle โ the channel draining the abhishekam is not crossed. Walk to it, turn, and come back the way you came. Watching what the queue in front of you does is the reliable guide.
Come in winter
Winter is when Agra is most comfortable to walk around, which matters here because a temple visit is done on foot and barefoot. Locally the window is given as october to march.
Stone gets hot โ go early
You will be barefoot from the shoe rack onwards, often across an open courtyard. Between late morning and mid-afternoon in the hot months that stone is genuinely painful to stand on. Socks help, and are permitted almost everywhere shoes are not.
Metro, then walk
Agra has a metro, and it is usually the fastest way to get near a busy temple โ the streets immediately around one are often closed to vehicles or jammed with them.

Kailash Mandir, Sikandra
Kailash Mandir sits in the Sikandra belt north-west of Agra, which is where the city's second cluster of sights lives: Akbar's Tomb, Guru ka Taal, Dayal Bagh and this temple are all within a couple of kilometres of each other on the Delhi road. If you are doing the Sikandra half-day โ and you should, it is far quieter than the Taj axis โ Kailash Mandir is a natural addition rather than a separate trip.
๐๏ธ What it is
A Shiva temple devoted to Kailashnath, the lord of Mount Kailash. Local tradition holds that some of the lingams here were brought from Kailash itself, which is the source of the temple's name and its standing. Some accounts describe the shrine as extremely old โ the '5,000-year' figures circulating online are devotional rather than historical, and the building you see is not that old. Treat the antiquity claims as faith, not archaeology.
๐ Timings
Published hours vary between 6:00 AM and 8:00, 8:30 or 9:00 PM depending on the source. Plan for roughly 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM and confirm locally if you are making a special trip. Entry is free. The recommended visit length is about 30โ45 minutes.
๐ Dress and conduct
Modest dress, shoulders and knees covered. Footwear off before the shrine. Photography is allowed outside the sanctum but restricted inside โ shoot the temple building and the courtyard, not the lingam.
๐ธ Festivals
Mahashivratri runs as a night-long puja with a fair around the temple, and Shravan (Sawan) Mondays in July and August are the busiest recurring days. Rudrabhishek is performed on request.
๐ก Getting there
Sikandra is about 9โ10 km from the Taj Mahal area and 12โ14 km from Agra Airport, on the NH-19 Delhi road. Agra Cantt is roughly 10 km south, Idgah bus stand about 8 km. The metro does not reach Sikandra โ the operational corridor runs from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar, so this is an auto, e-rickshaw or taxi trip. Expect โน200โ300 by auto from the Taj area; agree the fare before you get in.
The efficient sequence is Akbar's Tomb โ Guru ka Taal (adjacent, free langar if you are hungry) โ Dayal Bagh โ Kailash Mandir, all north of the city, then back south on the same road.
No coordinates are published for this temple to a level we trust, so no map pin is shown. Ask for 'Kailash Mandir, Kailash Road, Sikandra' โ it is known locally and sits near Akbar's Tomb.
Last verified: 2026. Timings, entry arrangements and any charges are published by the temple itself and do change - confirm them with the temple's own official website or counter before travelling rather than relying on any third-party listing.
